about

This collection was inspired by the gift of a kalimba, which led to an exploration of resonant metal instruments and objects in general. Other instruments featured here include a metal tongue drum played with rubber mallets, a Tibetan singing bowl, various gong-like and bell-like objects and even a pair of large gas cylinders.

Overall the atmosphere of these pieces is spacious and meditative, and in most cases the use of the tuned percussion is minimalist. In exploring their resonant qualities, I've experimented with slowing the sounds to various speeds, reversing them and otherwise manipulating them with subtle electronics for texture.

In creating this collection, with its focus on metal resonance, I was reminded of the deep history of bells, chimes, gongs and the like in Asian spiritual traditions, often used in meditative ceremony. Thus a theme developed, a sense of sacred spaces, those we physically inhabit and those we cultivate within ourselves, and the spaces between things, in the flavour of Buddhist and Taoist philosophy.
