about

Tribal percussion is the backbone of this collection - dunduns, djembes, kpanlogo & darabuka etc - earthy, rhythm-driven, organic with some dubby moments & electronic edges.

From around 2005 - 2011 I taught African(ish)-style drumming & rhythm awareness adapted from my experiences with Reinhard Flatischler's Ta Ke Tin Na process in the 90s. During this time I led a few small community drumming groups, one of which was a lively bunch of musically precocious kids (ages 9 - 13 when the group first formed).

We called the group Rhythm Collision, and over four years of weekly sessions we developed a repertoire based on some of my own drumming compositions & others the kids created together. The group was tight & rhythmically sophisticated, the kids were full of exuberant energy, and we performed often at local festivals & community events. When the group disbanded, we had a final fling one afternoon at a friend's home studio to record the repertoire live as a memento.

I recently dug out the original recordings, selected the highlights and reshaped them, adding bass and a few other musical elements. After a fair bit of surgical rearrangement and electronic treatments of the drum sounds, this album is the result.
