about

Continuing my current process of reviewing my life via my musical past, Ramshackle Alchemy is a collection of early unreleased recordings between 2004 - 2009, some of my first (and favourite) experiments with home recording.

I actually compiled this album back in 2010, when I realised I'd accumulated a lot of individual pieces that had no particular home. This was years before I was in a position to focus on music fulltime, so these pieces were moments snatched in the midst of life's other demands and emotional weathers. When I assembled them all, I was surprised at how much I'd accomplished without realising it.

I think of these pieces as 'ramshackle folk' - mostly acoustic instruments (fingerstyle guitar, ukulele, mandolin, octave mandola, balalaika, African percussion etc), playing with flavours from around the world: latin, Moorish, roots, Appalachian, Celtic folk, Mexican, Americana, and Other - just trying stuff out in order to learn & expand my musical knowledge.

The 'ramshackle alchemy' is about the surprises and discoveries that occur from having to work with minimal resources & timeframes, making do with whatever materials are at hand. The rough DIY edges are part of their 'folk' texture, but the musical ideas are rich and diverse. As a self-taught musician with no understanding of music theory, every one of these pieces represents some new discovery in my evolution as a musical person.
